Oliver Postgate

So farewell then... creator of Noggin the Nog, Ivor the Engine, Bagpuss and best of all the magnificent, and knitted, Clangers (Tiny, in her tutu, from last year's Christmas tree, illustrated above). They were brilliant creations, and a generation of us benefited from Postgate's imagination.

I met him once - he came to our house to tea! His wife was a Quaker, as are my parents, and he was involved with the Quaker Peace Action Caravan (at least, I think that's what it was) and was speaking at Birkenhead Meeting House - hence tea with us first.

Weren't those programmes so much more fun than Tellytubbies and their like? My favourite Postgate/Firmin series was Pogle's Wood, though I could only see it during school holidays (and I think it was only on from 66-68, so you're probably too young to remember it. Mrs Pogle had a spinning wheel).
